Best of Both Worlds

     The phrase “the best of both worlds” refers to an item or situation that offers the benefits of two contrasting situations, often disregarding any undesirable disadvantages. It implies that you are essentially getting a two-for-one deal. Double lives are commonly used to obtain this deceptive deal.

    Psychologists claim that a large number of people are living in 2 separate worlds, captured in their own lies, shame, and guilt that eventually power them into behaviors that are way too different from their daily lives. These behaviors can damage careers, break families, and ruin the lives of many people. In the most appalling scenarios, these dual lives lead to criminal acts, violence, and sometimes even murder. It often separates an individual from reality and forces them to live a life of secrecy. The ideology behind double lives are both corruptive and destructive.

    A well-known example would be the show Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus’s infamous TV persona, Hannah Montana, lives a double life. She got to live the famous life of Hannah Montana and the normal life of Miley Stewart. Through each episode, we see Miley’s everyday struggles to cope with the social and personal issues of being a teenager all while maintaining her secret and life as a global superstar. One of the main conflicts of the show is the disconnect between the public and private lives of Miley, and the lengths she must go to protect herself and her relationships with her friends and family. She thinks that by revealing her identity the people around her will begin to treat her differently. The Hannah Montana series suggests that happiness comes as a result of staying true to one’s self. 

    Although the stories of Miley and Dorian are from different eras, writers, and societies, the parallels of living the “best of both worlds” showcase that this corrupt idea of living a life of secrecy and lies has stayed the same through numerous decades.
